I am a firm believer in the old proverb: “If you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day – if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.” By every measure, we are not teaching our children how to fish. I understand that the School District Board and Superintendent govern the schools; however, this problem involves OUR children -- so education belongs to this whole community. It still takes a village (meaning all of us) to raise (meaning “educate”) our children. I will work with the school district to develop a skilled trades program that is not exclusive to students at Edison Tech. I will work with local businesses to train current high school students so that they will be ready for employment when they graduate from school. This project will operate in a similar fashion as the RIT Co-Op Program which serves vocational interests of students on a practical level. We can no longer allow our children to fall behind “the eight ball” and drop out of sight with no hand reaching down to pull them back up again.
